What's Happening?
Ground Control and the ArduPilot Development Team have successfully demonstrated the performance of MAVLink telemetry over the Iridium Certus satellite service. This collaboration enables ArduPilot-powered unmanned systems to operate in remote regions
where traditional communication networks are unavailable. The RockREMOTE UAV OEM modem provides an IP data path for Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations, supporting essential situational awareness and command and control functions. The demonstration showed stable telemetry with latencies ranging from 600 to 1600 ms, highlighting the potential for satellite-enabled autonomy in disconnected environments.
Why It's Important?
The successful demonstration of MAVLink telemetry over Iridium Certus represents a significant advancement in satellite communication for unmanned systems. This technology enables UAVs to operate beyond the reach of terrestrial networks, expanding their capabilities in remote and challenging environments. The ability to maintain reliable communication links is crucial for BVLOS operations, which are increasingly important for applications such as surveillance, environmental monitoring, and disaster response. The collaboration between Ground Control and ArduPilot provides a practical framework for integrating satellite communication into unmanned systems, offering new opportunities for innovation and deployment in the UAV industry.
What's Next?
Following the successful demonstration, Ground Control and ArduPilot are likely to continue refining their satellite communication solutions for unmanned systems. The focus will be on optimizing performance and addressing challenges such as bandwidth constraints and installation variables. The results of this collaboration could lead to the development of new products and services that enhance the capabilities of UAVs in remote areas. As the demand for BVLOS operations grows, the integration of satellite communication will become increasingly important, driving further advancements in the UAV industry and expanding the potential applications of unmanned systems.
