What's Happening?
Belfast City Airport has welcomed six new apprentices to its High Flyers Apprenticeship Programme, which has been expanded to include IT roles for the first time. The program, now in its 12th year, aims to tackle youth unemployment in Northern Ireland
by providing hands-on experience and industry-recognized qualifications. The apprentices will work within the airport's firefighting and IT departments, gaining valuable skills and contributing to the airport's long-term growth. Aileen O'Kane, head of people and purpose at Belfast City Airport, emphasized the program's role in building a skilled workforce and supporting the airport's development.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of the High Flyers Apprenticeship Programme to include IT roles reflects the growing importance of technology in the aviation industry. By providing young people with opportunities to develop specialized skills, the program helps address youth unemployment and prepares a new generation of workers for future challenges. This initiative supports the airport's strategic goals and contributes to the regional economy by fostering innovation and growth. It also highlights the role of apprenticeships in bridging the skills gap and ensuring that industries have access to a qualified workforce.
