What's Happening?
On April 25, 2026, the Brand Library & Art Center in Glendale hosted a performance of 'Bipedal Herd Dance,' choreographed by Holly Rothschild. This event is part of an annual spring series curated by Jamie
Nichols, aimed at bringing site-specific dance performances to non-traditional spaces. The performance featured a unique setup with the audience seated on three sides and musicians on the fourth, creating an immersive experience. The dancers, dressed in complementary costumes, performed a series of solos, duos, trios, and quartets, incorporating elements of classical jazz and modern dance. The performance included innovative use of props, such as black chairs, and was accompanied by music from Luke Rothschild and others, including a memorable piece by Nat King Cole.
Why It's Important?
This performance highlights the importance of community engagement in the arts, offering free access to high-quality dance performances in a non-traditional setting. By bringing dance to the public in this way, the event supports cultural enrichment and accessibility, encouraging broader participation in the arts. The innovative choreography and use of space demonstrate how traditional art forms can be adapted to new environments, potentially inspiring other artists and organizations to explore similar approaches. This event also underscores the role of local cultural institutions like the Brand Library in fostering artistic expression and community involvement.
What's Next?
The Brand Library's dance series will continue with upcoming performances by Celeste Lanuza Dance Theater, Deborah Rosen and Dancers, and LA Swing Dance Posse, scheduled for May 2, May 9, and May 16, respectively. These events will further contribute to the community's cultural offerings, providing opportunities for local artists to showcase their work and for audiences to experience diverse dance styles. The ongoing series is expected to attract more visitors and enhance the library's reputation as a hub for the arts.
