What's Happening?
Cargill, in collaboration with food technology company Voyage Foods, has launched a new product called NextCoa in North America, starting with the United States. NextCoa is a cocoa-free alternative to traditional chocolate, offering a 'chocolatey-like
taste' using plant-based ingredients such as grape seeds. The product is available in two varieties: mild (similar to milk chocolate) and dark mild (a blend of dark and milk chocolate-like flavors). It is designed for use in various applications, including bars, baked goods, ice cream, and snack coatings. The partnership leverages Voyage Foods' technology and Cargill's supply chain capabilities to bring this innovative product to market. NextCoa is vegan, Kosher pareve, and Halal suitable, and it is formulated without major allergens like dairy, soy, peanuts, and tree nuts. This makes it an attractive option for food manufacturers and consumers seeking allergen-free and environmentally friendly alternatives.
Why It's Important?
The introduction of NextCoa is significant as it addresses several key consumer trends and industry challenges. With growing consumer demand for plant-based and allergen-free products, NextCoa offers a viable alternative to traditional chocolate, which often contains allergens and has a higher environmental impact. The product's 67% lower carbon footprint compared to conventional chocolate aligns with increasing environmental consciousness among consumers and manufacturers. Additionally, the partnership between Cargill and Voyage Foods highlights the potential for innovation in the food industry, particularly in creating sustainable and scalable alternatives to popular food products. This development could influence other companies to explore similar innovations, potentially reshaping the confectionery market.
What's Next?
Cargill plans to expand the distribution of NextCoa beyond the United States to Canada, working with regional partners such as Batory Foods, Blendtek, and Azelis company Gillco Ingredients. As the exclusive global business-to-business distributor for Voyage Foods, Cargill aims to scale the availability of NextCoa, making it accessible to more manufacturers. This expansion could lead to increased adoption of cocoa-free chocolate alternatives in various food products, potentially influencing consumer preferences and industry standards. The success of NextCoa may also encourage further research and development in plant-based food innovations, contributing to a more sustainable food system.
