What's Happening?
York Space Systems has announced its acquisition of Solestial, a manufacturer of space-solar cells, marking its third acquisition this year. Solestial, based in Arizona, produces ultra-thin, radiation-hardened silicon solar cells, primarily sourced from
the U.S. This acquisition aims to enhance York's control over its supply chain and expand its capabilities in the growing market for commercial and defense spacecraft. Solestial will continue to operate as a wholly owned subsidiary, providing York with access to cost-efficient solar technology.
Why It's Important?
The acquisition of Solestial by York Space Systems underscores the increasing demand for space-rated solar cells as the number of satellites in orbit continues to grow. By integrating Solestial's technology, York aims to reduce supply chain risks and lower costs, enabling the production of more complex satellite systems. This strategic move positions York to better compete in the expanding space industry, particularly in the commercial and defense sectors. The acquisition reflects broader trends in the space industry, where companies are seeking to vertically integrate to enhance efficiency and competitiveness.
