What's Happening?
The adidas Foundation, in collaboration with Beyond Sport and Common Goal, has launched the Play Collective initiative to coincide with the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted in North America. This initiative aims to expand access to inclusive
sports and youth development opportunities in host cities across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Play Collective is part of the adidas Foundation's Playing for Purpose program, which seeks to create safer spaces and opportunities for underserved youth to participate in sports. The initiative is supported by a $4.87 million commitment over three years, providing community sport organizations with grants of up to $180,000 each, along with learning support and a collaborative network to enhance program delivery. The goal is to increase sports participation and access for young people and to establish a stronger, more equitable youth sports ecosystem that will endure beyond the World Cup.
Why It's Important?
The Play Collective initiative addresses a significant gap in physical activity levels among young people, particularly in North American communities that have historically received fewer resources. By supporting organizations that create safe and inclusive sports environments, the initiative aims to improve physical and mental health, build teamwork and resilience, and foster meaningful community connections among youth. Unlike many short-lived World Cup community programs, Play Collective is designed for continuity and lasting impact, emphasizing multi-year investment, safeguarding, governance, and collective learning. This approach not only enhances the immediate benefits of sports participation but also ensures a durable legacy that extends beyond the tournament, contributing to a more equitable youth sports landscape.
What's Next?
As the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches, the Play Collective initiative will continue to develop and implement its programs across host cities in North America. The initiative's focus on long-term impact and community engagement suggests that it will work closely with local organizations to tailor programs to specific community needs. The creation of a 'Community of Practice' with representatives from all project partners will facilitate ongoing collaboration and knowledge sharing, enhancing the initiative's effectiveness and sustainability. Stakeholders, including local governments, community leaders, and sports organizations, are likely to play a crucial role in supporting and expanding the initiative's reach and impact.
