What's Happening?
The Washington Huskies football team has bolstered its special teams by securing a commitment from Texas State kicker Tyler Robles via the transfer portal. Robles, who had an impressive season with the Bobcats, was named second team All-Sun Belt in 2025 after setting a Texas State single-season scoring record with 116 points. He made 21 of 23 field goals and 53 of 54 extra points. Robles, originally from Encinitas, California, has two seasons of eligibility remaining and is expected to compete for the starting placekicker position at Washington. The Huskies are undergoing a special teams overhaul, with Robles joining other new recruits such as offensive lineman Kolt Dieterich, punter Hunter Green, and defensive lineman Desean Watts.
Why It's Important?
The addition
of Tyler Robles is significant for the Washington Huskies as they aim to strengthen their special teams unit. With the graduation of their 2025 kicker Grady Gross, the Huskies are in need of a reliable kicker, and Robles' proven track record makes him a strong candidate. His ability to score from long distances, as demonstrated by his 3-of-4 record from beyond 50 yards, adds a valuable asset to the team. This move is part of a broader strategy to enhance the team's competitiveness in upcoming seasons, potentially impacting their performance in close games where field goals can be decisive.
What's Next?
Robles will compete with returning walk-on kickoff specialist Ethan Moczulski and incoming three-star kicker CJ Wallace for the starting placekicker role. The competition is expected to be intense, as each player brings unique strengths to the position. The Huskies will also integrate new special teams players, including punter Hunter Green, who will serve as the primary holder for field goals. The team's only returning starter in the special teams battery is long snapper Ryan Kean, who is entering his final season of eligibility.
