What's Happening?
Telekom Malaysia (TM) has announced that it is the first telecommunications company in the country to receive the ISO/IEC 42001:2023 certification for its Artificial Intelligence Management System (AIMS). This certification was achieved through TM's AI Centre
of Excellence and validated by SIRIM QAS International, a Malaysian certification body. The ISO/IEC 42001 standard, first published in 2023, is designed to address the unique challenges of AI, including ethical considerations, transparency, and continuous learning. It sets requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining, and improving an AIMS to ensure responsible AI development and use. TM's certification indicates that its AI systems are developed with rigorous governance, ethical safeguards, and robust risk management. According to TM group CEO Amar Huzaimi Md Deris, this certification supports TM's role as a reliable digital infrastructure partner, providing a trusted foundation for organizations to build AI-driven solutions.
Why It's Important?
The certification of Telekom Malaysia's AI management systems is significant as it positions the company as a leader in structured and safe AI practices. This achievement not only enhances TM's credibility as a digital infrastructure provider but also sets a benchmark for other organizations in the region. By adhering to the ISO/IEC 42001 standard, TM ensures that its AI systems are developed with a focus on ethical considerations and risk management, which is crucial in building trust with consumers and partners. This move could potentially influence other companies to adopt similar standards, thereby promoting a more responsible and transparent AI ecosystem. Furthermore, as AI continues to play a critical role in digital transformation, TM's certification could attract more businesses seeking reliable AI solutions, thereby boosting its market position.
What's Next?
With the ISO/IEC 42001 certification, Telekom Malaysia is well-positioned to guide other organizations in adopting structured AI practices. This could lead to increased collaboration with businesses looking to integrate AI into their operations. TM may also leverage this certification to expand its AI-driven services and solutions, potentially exploring new markets and sectors. As the demand for AI solutions grows, TM's adherence to international standards could serve as a competitive advantage, enabling it to attract more clients and partnerships. Additionally, TM's commitment to ethical AI practices may prompt regulatory bodies to consider similar standards for other industries, further promoting responsible AI development.
