What's Happening?
The Original Rainbow Cone, a dessert shop known for its unique five-flavor ice cream stack, has opened its second location in Orange County, California. The new store is situated at 244 South Coast Highway in Laguna Beach, directly across from Main Beach Park.
This expansion follows the brand's initial entry into the Orange County market with a store in Cypress in February 2025. The Laguna Beach location celebrated its grand opening by offering free cones to the first 100 customers, a gesture that was well-received and quickly exhausted. The store is managed by Alan Garcia, who has previous experience working in Laguna Beach, and is owned by Anne Hsiung, a Chicago native who grew up enjoying Rainbow Cone. The brand, originally founded in Chicago in 1926 by Joe Sapp and his wife Kathleen, has now expanded to 30 locations nationwide.
Why It's Important?
The opening of Rainbow Cone in Laguna Beach is significant as it adds a new dimension to the local culinary scene, attracting both residents and tourists. The store's strategic location near a popular beach and its timing ahead of the busy summer season positions it well to capitalize on increased foot traffic. This expansion reflects a broader trend of regional brands extending their reach to new markets, potentially boosting local economies by creating jobs and drawing visitors. For the community, it offers a nostalgic and unique dessert option that resonates with both locals and visitors, enhancing the area's appeal as a diverse culinary destination.
What's Next?
As the summer season approaches, Rainbow Cone is expected to experience a surge in business, particularly given its proximity to Main Beach Park, a popular tourist destination. The store's management is preparing for this peak period by ensuring that staff are well-trained and ready to handle increased demand. The success of this location could influence further expansion plans for Rainbow Cone in other coastal or tourist-heavy areas. Additionally, the completion of the nearby Promenade of Forest is anticipated to further increase foot traffic, potentially boosting sales and brand visibility.
