What's Happening?
Jett Washington, the nephew of the late NBA legend Kobe Bryant, has announced that he will wear the number 24 jersey for the Oregon Ducks football team. This decision is a tribute to his uncle, who famously wore the same number during the latter part
of his career with the Los Angeles Lakers. Washington, a highly-rated recruit from Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, revealed his jersey choice through an Instagram story as Oregon prepares for its Spring Ball practices. Washington, a 6-foot-5 defensive back, was ranked as the No. 1 safety and No. 23 overall player in the 2026 recruiting class by 247Sports. He chose Oregon over other top programs like Alabama and USC.
Why It's Important?
The decision by Jett Washington to wear the number 24 jersey is significant as it highlights the enduring legacy of Kobe Bryant, whose influence extends beyond basketball into other sports. By choosing this number, Washington not only honors his uncle's memory but also embraces the 'Mamba mentality' that Bryant was known for, which emphasizes hard work, resilience, and competitiveness. This move could inspire other athletes to pay homage to their heroes and maintain the cultural impact of sports figures across different disciplines. Additionally, Washington's choice brings attention to Oregon's football program, potentially attracting more recruits and fans who admire Bryant's legacy.
