Mark Smythe, a composer and professor based in Los Angeles, passed away at the age of 53 following a medical emergency on the Mount Wilson hiking trail. The Los Angeles Coroner's office confirmed that the cause of death was cardiovascular disease. Smythe, originally
from New Zealand, was known for his work in film scoring, having been nominated for an SCL Award and a World Soundtrack Award for his score for Hulu's 'The Reef: Stalked' in 2023. His other notable works include scores for 'The Possessed,' 'Love You Like That,' 'Boar,' and 'Unfallen.' Smythe was also a respected educator, teaching media composition at Cal State University, Northridge, and serving as the Department Head of Composing for Visual Media at the Los Angeles College of Music. He was recently selected as a Composer Fellow for the 2024 Choral Arts Initiative PREMIERE|Project Festival.
