What's Happening?
The National Center for Choreography Akron (NCCAkron) is marking its 10th anniversary as a pivotal institution for dance research and development in the United States. Founded by Christy Bolingbroke, the center serves as an incubator for dance, providing
artists with resources and space to explore creative processes. Unlike traditional funding bodies or presenters, NCCAkron focuses on connecting artists with the necessary tools and opportunities to innovate. Bolingbroke's journey to Akron involved various roles in dance administration, including positions at the Kennedy Center and the Mark Morris Dance Group. Her vision for NCCAkron was to create a space that addresses gaps in the dance field, fostering adaptability and creativity. The center's unique approach includes programs like the Dancing Labs Model and Creative Administrative Research, which aim to support a wide range of artists and challenge conventional funding models.
Why It's Important?
NCCAkron's approach to dance innovation is significant as it challenges traditional models of artistic support and development. By focusing on adaptability and creative exploration, the center provides a platform for artists to experiment without the pressure of immediate commercial success. This model not only supports established artists but also nurtures emerging talent, contributing to the sustainability and evolution of the dance industry. The center's initiatives, such as the Creative Administrative Research program, address the scarcity mindset prevalent in the arts, encouraging artists to explore new possibilities and business models. This approach has the potential to influence broader arts administration practices, promoting a more inclusive and flexible environment for artistic growth.
What's Next?
Looking ahead, NCCAkron plans to host a Summit Convening in June 2026, bringing together CAR alumni and arts leaders to discuss topics like choreography of numbers and app development for freelancer fee design. Additionally, a Dancing Lab focused on 'writing as power and currency' will take place in July 2026, exploring cultural competency with MoBBallet's Theresa Ruth Howard. The center also aims to engage the Akron community with a year-long series of screendance films, challenging audience habits and fostering a deeper curiosity about dance. These initiatives reflect NCCAkron's commitment to pushing the boundaries of dance and arts administration, ensuring its continued impact on the field.
