Rivian Automotive has announced that its new R2 Performance SUV matches the Tesla Model Y Performance in terms of efficiency, achieving 105 MPGe combined and 32 kWh per 100 miles. Despite being a larger and heavier vehicle, the R2 surpasses the Model Y in range,
offering 330 miles compared to Tesla's 306 miles. This achievement is notable given the R2's boxier and more utilitarian design, which typically hinders aerodynamic efficiency. The R2's platform benefits from significant cost and weight reductions, including die casting and a new drive unit, making it approximately 1,300 lbs lighter than its predecessor, the R1S. The R2 Performance is priced at $57,990, closely matching the Tesla Model Y Performance's price of $57,490.
