What's Happening?
The First Group Hospitality, based in Dubai, has partnered with MIDROC Investment Group to develop and operate 10 new properties across Ethiopia. This agreement, signed at the Future Hospitality Summit Africa in Nairobi, will introduce approximately 1,140
keys across six Ethiopian cities, including Addis Ababa and Hawassa, between 2026 and 2031. The portfolio will feature both independent and Marriott-branded hotels, marking a significant expansion of internationally branded hospitality assets in Ethiopia. This collaboration aligns with The First Group's strategy to expand its management platform in Africa and supports MIDROC's growth in the Ethiopian hospitality sector.
Why It's Important?
This development is crucial for Ethiopia's hospitality industry, as it represents a substantial increase in the availability of internationally branded accommodations. The partnership between The First Group and MIDROC is expected to enhance Ethiopia's appeal as a tourist destination, potentially boosting the local economy and creating job opportunities. The introduction of Marriott-branded properties could attract more international visitors, contributing to the country's tourism revenue. Additionally, this agreement underscores the growing interest of global hospitality players in the African market, which could lead to increased competition and innovation in the sector.
What's Next?
As the project progresses, both The First Group and MIDROC will focus on ensuring the successful development and operation of the new properties. This includes navigating potential challenges such as regulatory approvals and infrastructure development. The partnership is also likely to emphasize sustainable tourism practices and the development of local talent, aligning with broader industry trends. Stakeholders, including local communities and government agencies, will be keen to see how this expansion impacts Ethiopia's tourism landscape and economic growth.
