What's Happening?
Discord has announced that all voice and video calls on its platform are now protected by default with end-to-end encryption (E2EE). This implementation was completed in March and follows extensive testing to ensure the system's reliability. The encryption protocol,
known as DAVE, was first introduced in September 2024 and has been extended to support all platforms where Discord operates, including desktop, mobile, web browsers, PlayStation, Xbox, and Discord SDKs. The encryption covers direct messages, group messages, voice channels, and Go Live streams, with the exception of stage channels, which are designed for large public broadcasts. Discord's move to E2EE aims to enhance user privacy by ensuring that no one, including Discord itself, can access the content of users' conversations.

However, as privacy demands continue to grow, Discord may face pressure to overcome these challenges and provide a fully encrypted messaging experience. Additionally, the company will need to ensure that the encryption does not impact user experience, particularly in terms of latency and compatibility across different platforms.
