Matthew Schaefer, a defenseman for the New York Islanders, has been named to the NHL All-Rookie Team for the 2025-26 season. This accolade recognizes the top six rookies in the league, as voted by the Professional Hockey Writers Association. Schaefer had
an outstanding rookie season, setting records with 59 points, including 23 goals and 36 assists, in 82 games. He tied the record for most goals by a rookie defenseman and set new records for points by an 18-year-old defenseman, average time on ice, and overtime points by a teenage defenseman. Schaefer is the fifth player in Islanders history to receive this honor.
