What's Happening?
Julia Riew, a composer-lyricist and librettist, is making her solo debut with the middle grade fantasy novel 'Shim Jung Takes the Dive.' The story is set in a fictional land inspired by Korean folklore and follows a 12-year-old girl named Jung who is apprehensive
about a traditional diving ritual due to her mother's death at sea. During a storm, Jung is swept into a magical underwater kingdom ruled by a vengeful queen. To prevent the queen from destroying the mortal world, Jung must collaborate with a rebellious prince. Riew's work is influenced by her Korean American heritage and aims to foster empathy among younger generations. The novel is based on the Korean folk tale 'Sim Cheong-jeon,' which is notable for its focus on a young female protagonist.
Why It's Important?
Riew's novel contributes to the growing body of literature that seeks to provide diverse cultural representation in children's books. By drawing on Korean folklore, the story offers young readers a unique perspective that blends cultural authenticity with fantasy. This approach not only enriches the literary landscape but also helps young readers develop empathy and understanding for different cultures. The novel's themes of courage and collaboration are particularly relevant in today's globalized world, where cross-cultural understanding is increasingly important. Additionally, Riew's work highlights the potential of fantasy as a genre to explore complex cultural identities in a way that is accessible and engaging for children.
