What's Happening?
Gunnison Copper has received approval under the Arizona Commerce Authority’s Qualified Facility Tax Credit (QFTC) Program, securing non-dilutive refundable tax credit funding for its operations in the U.S. This approval supports the company's initiative
to manufacture pure American copper in Arizona. The Gunnison Copper Project, located in the Southern Arizona Copper Belt, is set to produce an average of 174 million pounds of copper cathode annually for the first 15 years, contributing significantly to U.S. domestic copper production. The project involves conventional open-pit mining, heap leach, and SX/EW refinery processes, with a direct rail link for distribution.
Why It's Important?
The approval of tax credits for Gunnison Copper is a strategic boost for the U.S. copper industry, which is critical for various sectors including infrastructure, manufacturing, and defense. By enhancing domestic copper production, the project supports the U.S. goal of securing supply chains for critical minerals. This initiative is expected to create high-quality jobs and foster economic growth in Arizona. Additionally, it aligns with national efforts to reduce reliance on foreign sources for essential materials, thereby strengthening economic resilience and national security.
What's Next?
Gunnison Copper plans to advance its operations with the support of the QFTC Program, focusing on expanding its production capabilities and enhancing its role in the U.S. copper market. The company is likely to continue collaborating with local communities and stakeholders to ensure sustainable development. As the project progresses, it may attract further government and institutional support, potentially leading to additional investments and partnerships. The success of this initiative could set a precedent for similar projects, encouraging other companies to invest in domestic mineral production.
