What's Happening?
MassRobotics announced the winners of the 2026 Robotics Medal and Rising Star awards, recognizing the contributions of women in the field of robotics. Dr. Allison Okamura from Stanford University received the Robotics Medal for her work in haptics and medical
robotics, while Dr. Ayoung Kim from Seoul National University was awarded the Rising Star Medal for her advancements in lidar place recognition. These awards, supported by Amazon Robotics, aim to celebrate and inspire women in STEM fields.
Why It's Important?
The recognition of women in robotics through these awards highlights the ongoing efforts to increase diversity in STEM fields. Women remain underrepresented in engineering and robotics, making up only 16% of the workforce. By celebrating female achievements, these awards encourage more women to pursue careers in robotics, potentially leading to more diverse perspectives and innovations in the field. The support from major organizations like Amazon further emphasizes the importance of diversity in driving technological advancements.
What's Next?
MassRobotics will host a formal gala to award the medals and celebrate the recipients at the MIT Samberg Conference Center in November. This event will provide networking opportunities and further promote the achievements of women in robotics. Continued efforts to support women in STEM, such as the MassRobotics Jumpstart Fellowship program, are expected to foster the next generation of female leaders in technology.
