What's Happening?
Graphite One Inc. has provided an update on the permitting progress of its Graphite Creek Project in Alaska under the FAST-41 federal permitting program. The project, which involves an open-pit graphite mine and mineral processing plant, was accepted
as a FAST-41 'covered project' in June 2025, making it the first Alaska mining project on the FAST-41 Federal Permitting Dashboard. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is leading the project, which remains on schedule for a federal permitting decision by September 2026. The FAST-41 program aims to streamline the federal permitting process for major infrastructure and critical minerals projects, enhancing transparency and accountability.
Why It's Important?
The FAST-41 status is significant for Graphite One as the U.S. is currently 100% import-dependent on foreign graphite, primarily from China, for various high-tech applications. The project supports national priorities to establish a secure, domestic supply chain for critical minerals, aligning with recent Presidential Executive Orders. The development of the Graphite Creek Project is crucial for the U.S. to reduce its reliance on foreign sources and enhance its strategic mineral security. The project also plans to include a manufacturing facility in Ohio, further integrating the supply chain and supporting the U.S. electric vehicle and energy storage sectors.
What's Next?
Graphite One plans to pursue FAST-41 coverage for its proposed Ohio manufacturing facility, which will process Graphite Creek concentrate into high-value anode materials. This facility is expected to support the U.S. electric vehicle sector, energy storage, AI data centers, and defense markets. The company is also working on a potential recycling facility to reclaim graphite and other battery materials, further enhancing its circular economy strategy. These developments are contingent on securing project financing and obtaining necessary permits.
