What's Happening?
Haleon, in collaboration with Flywheel and OM Sustainable Solutions, conducted a comprehensive carbon audit of its US retail media activities using the Global Media Sustainability Framework. This audit revealed
that Haleon's 2024 campaigns generated 880 metric tons of CO2e, equivalent to the annual electricity use of 121 US homes. The audit aimed to align Haleon's media activities with sustainability goals without compromising performance. By analyzing emissions across different media channels and formats, Haleon identified opportunities to reduce its carbon footprint. The company shifted its media strategy towards more efficient channels, such as online display, and adopted sustainable media formats like shorter video lengths and lighter file formats. This strategic shift was guided by data-driven insights, allowing Haleon to maintain performance while reducing emissions.
Why It's Important?
The carbon audit conducted by Haleon highlights the growing importance of sustainability in media planning. By integrating environmental considerations into its media strategy, Haleon sets a precedent for other companies to follow. The audit not only helps reduce the company's carbon footprint but also demonstrates that sustainability and business performance can coexist. This approach could influence the broader media industry, encouraging more companies to adopt similar frameworks and prioritize sustainability. The initiative aligns with Haleon's mission to improve everyday health and reflects a commitment to responsible business practices. As companies face increasing pressure to address climate change, Haleon's actions could inspire others to incorporate sustainability into their core operations, potentially leading to industry-wide changes.
What's Next?

The company aims to further reduce emissions by refining its media mix and selecting partners based on sustainability criteria. Haleon has developed a Sustainable Media Playbook to guide future media planning and ensure that sustainability remains a central focus. The company will also expand its efforts to other markets, including Germany, Italy, the UK, Canada, and India, as part of its commitment to reducing Scope 3 emissions by 2030 and 2040. Haleon's ongoing efforts will likely involve collaboration with industry partners to establish best practices and drive broader adoption of sustainable media planning.
