What's Happening?
Philippine telecommunications company PLDT has received approval from three indigenous cultural communities in Palawan for its Palawan Resiliency Submarine Cable Project. This project aims to enhance the network resiliency of the island by adding more
subsea cable routes. PLDT, in collaboration with the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP), has signed Memorandums of Agreement with the Tagbanua Central ICC in Napsan and Tagbanua Calamian ICC in Busuanga. An additional agreement with the Tagbanua Tandulanen ICC in Sibaltan, El Nido is expected next month. PLDT has committed to respecting indigenous rights and adhering to cultural, social, and environmental safeguards during the project's implementation.
Why It's Important?
The subsea cable project is crucial for improving internet connectivity and network reliability in Palawan, a region that can benefit significantly from enhanced digital infrastructure. By securing the support of indigenous communities, PLDT not only ensures the project's smooth execution but also sets a precedent for respecting indigenous rights in infrastructure development. This initiative is part of a broader effort to bridge connectivity gaps in remote areas, which can lead to economic growth and improved access to digital services for local communities.
What's Next?
PLDT and the NCIP are expected to finalize the agreement with the Tagbanua Tandulanen ICC soon, which will allow the project to proceed further. The successful implementation of this project could encourage similar initiatives in other regions, potentially leading to widespread improvements in digital infrastructure across the Philippines. Stakeholders, including local governments and community leaders, will likely monitor the project's progress to ensure compliance with the agreed safeguards.
