The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has concluded its investigation into Tesla's 'Actually Smart Summon' remote parking feature. This feature, introduced in September 2024, allows Tesla owners to use their app to direct their vehicle
to drive to them at low speeds using only the car's cameras. The investigation, initiated in January 2025, was prompted by reports of dozens of crashes involving the feature. However, NHTSA found that these incidents were rare, occurring in a fraction of 1% of the millions of Summon sessions, and typically resulted in minor property damage such as hitting gates or parked cars. Importantly, there were no reported incidents involving injuries, fatalities, or major property damage. The investigation highlighted issues with the system's ability to fully detect surroundings, often due to limited visibility in the app's camera view, with some incidents caused by snow obstructing the camera.
