What's Happening?
The L.A. Dance Project, co-founded by choreographer Benjamin Millepied, is presenting 'City of Dance,' a series of free public performances at nine iconic Southern California landmarks. The performances, set to Philip Glass's score for the film 'Koyaanisqatsi,'
will take place over two weeks at locations including LACMA, Hollywood Forever Cemetery, and Tongva Park. The project aims to bring dance out of traditional theater settings and into the community, making it accessible to a wider audience. The performances feature choreography by Millepied and other renowned choreographers, exploring themes of nature, humanity, and technology.
Why It's Important?
'City of Dance' is a significant cultural initiative that democratizes access to the arts by offering free performances in public spaces. It highlights the potential of dance to engage diverse audiences and foster community connections. By choosing iconic landmarks as performance venues, the project emphasizes the cultural and historical significance of these locations, while also addressing contemporary issues such as urbanism and environmental change. The initiative reflects a broader trend of bringing art into public spaces, challenging traditional boundaries and encouraging new forms of artistic expression. It also underscores the role of dance in promoting dialogue and understanding within communities.
