Uber has announced the deployment of a new fleet of 500 specialized vehicles designed to collect real-world driving data. These vehicles, based on the Hyundai Ioniq 5 model, are equipped with advanced
sensors, including 14 cameras, 8 solid-state lidar sensors, and 9 radars. The data collected will be used to support Uber's autonomous vehicle partners, such as Avride, Waymo, and WeRide. This initiative marks a significant step for Uber's AV Labs division, which was established earlier this year to facilitate data collection and share it with over 30 technology partners. The company aims to create the world's most geographically diverse training dataset for autonomous driving, with the fleet expected to cover 2 million miles per month globally. The first 50 vehicles are anticipated to be operational by summer.
