What's Happening?
Carter Nilson, son of former Gonzaga standout Mike Nilson, has committed to play for the Gonzaga Bulldogs for the 2026-27 season. Carter, a 6'5 wing, recently completed his senior year at Gonzaga Prep and will join the Bulldogs as they enter the new Pac-12
conference. His commitment marks the first time a son of a former player coached by Mark Few has joined the program. Carter is expected to fill a role similar to a walk-on, although recent changes ensure all men's basketball student-athletes receive scholarships. He will help fill the void left by departing players Cade Orness and Joaquim ArauzMoore.
Why It's Important?
Carter Nilson's commitment to Gonzaga underscores the program's ability to attract talent with strong ties to its history. His addition to the team highlights the ongoing influence of family legacies in college sports, particularly at institutions like Gonzaga with a rich basketball tradition. The move also reflects the evolving landscape of college athletics, where scholarship policies and conference alignments are changing. For Gonzaga, securing a player with Carter's background and potential contributes to maintaining the team's competitive edge as they transition into the Pac-12.
