Virginia-based startup Tidal Flight has secured a significant order from Indian seaplane operator Maritime Energy Heli Air Services (Mehair) for its hybrid-electric Polaris amphibian aircraft. The deal, formalized at the Singapore Airshow, includes firm orders for five aircraft and options for an additional five. Mehair plans to utilize these aircraft for regional coastal air services, supporting a government-backed connectivity initiative that awarded them 92 seaplane routes. Tidal Flight's CEO, Jude Augustine, highlighted the modern monohull seaplane technology of the Polaris, which aims to improve aerodynamic performance. The development of the aircraft includes towing tank testing and the construction of full-scale subsystems and a hybrid powertrain.
The Polaris is designed for missions between 100 and 500 miles, with a maximum takeoff weight of 12,500 pounds and a cruise speed of 162 knots. The first flight of the full-scale prototype is targeted for 2028, with certification expected by 2030.
