What's Happening?
Chilean director Matías Bize, known for his award-winning film 'The Life of Fish,' is set to direct a new dramedy titled 'The Last Stand' ('Aquí Me Bajo Yo'). The film stars Jaime Vadell, a prominent Chilean actor, and is based on a 2025 Chilean stage
play by Elena Muñoz. The story unfolds over a stormy night when a grandfather decides to end his life on his own terms, leading to a tense reunion with his estranged son and granddaughter. The screenplay is adapted by Muñoz and the Bastidas siblings, who have previously collaborated on Amazon's 'Sin Frenos.' The film is in late development and aims to begin shooting in August 2026, with a release planned for 2027.
Why It's Important?
This project marks a thematic shift for Bize, who has previously focused on themes of love and relationships. 'The Last Stand' explores the end of life, a topic Bize has not tackled before. The film's production involves Cubho Audiovisual, a company founded in 2020, which is seeking private financing and potential co-production with Argentina, Spain, and Germany. The film's exploration of family dynamics and reconciliation could resonate with audiences, offering a poignant look at intergenerational relationships and personal autonomy.
What's Next?
The film is set to make its market debut at the Málaga Festival Fund & Co-Production Event (MAFF), where it will seek additional funding and distribution partners. The production team plans to follow a streamlined production model, focusing on a strong script and performances. As the film progresses, it may attract interest from international distributors, particularly given Bize's reputation and the film's universal themes.
