What's Happening?
Latine drag kings El Daña and Manny Oakley recently took center stage at the Barnsdall Gallery Theatre in East Hollywood during the 'Living Legends of Drag: Stories of LGBTQ+ Artistry & Culture' event. El Daña, recognized as the world's oldest performing
drag king, shared her journey and contributions to the LGBTQ+ community, including her work during the AIDS crisis. Manny Oakley, a younger drag king, highlighted the importance of challenging gender norms and preserving the history of drag through the LA Drag Archive.
Why It's Important?
The event underscores the significant role drag kings play in the LGBTQ+ community, often overshadowed by the popularity of drag queens. El Daña's recognition and Manny Oakley's archival efforts highlight the need for visibility and historical preservation of diverse gender expressions. This celebration of drag artistry contributes to broader cultural acceptance and understanding of gender diversity, fostering inclusivity and empowerment within the community.
