What's Happening?
USA Rare Earth has announced plans to invest $1.2 billion in a new magnet manufacturing and refined metals facility in Cherokee County, South Carolina. The facility, located in the Bailey Industrial Park in Blacksburg, will complement existing operations
in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The project aims to expand domestic production capacity for sintered neodymium-iron-boron permanent magnets and refined rare earth metals, creating approximately 490 highly-skilled jobs. The facility is expected to produce 6,400 tonnes per annum of magnets and 5,000 tonnes per annum of strip-cast metals and alloys.
Why It's Important?
The investment is a significant step in strengthening the domestic supply chain for rare earth elements, which are critical for sectors such as defense, aerospace, semiconductors, and medical technology. By increasing domestic production capacity, USA Rare Earth aims to reduce reliance on foreign sources and enhance national security. The project aligns with government financing and strategic plans to bolster advanced manufacturing capabilities in the U.S. The creation of new jobs will also contribute to economic growth in South Carolina.
What's Next?
Engineering and equipment procurement for the new site have begun, with site work scheduled to commence soon. The facility is expected to be commissioned by 2028. The choice of Cherokee County was influenced by factors such as grants, tax incentives, affordable power, and proximity to defense and aerospace clients. The project will support the development of a secure and traceable rare earth supply chain across the U.S. and allied nations.
