What's Happening?
Mubi, in collaboration with the Chanel Culture Fund, is launching a new initiative to stream a collection of Asian avant-garde films globally. The collection, titled 'Between Tides: Asian Avant-Garde,' will be available on Mubi starting January 16. This initiative is in partnership with Hong Kong's M+ art museum and features works from renowned filmmakers such as Apichatpong Weerasethakul and Kidlat Tahimik. The collection spans nearly six decades of Asian filmmaking, showcasing both classic and contemporary works. This marks the first time M+'s moving-image initiatives will be accessible to a worldwide audience, expanding Mubi's curatorial reach and Chanel's cultural influence in Asia.
Why It's Important?
The partnership between Mubi and Chanel highlights the growing
recognition and appreciation of Asian cinema on a global scale. By making these films accessible to a wider audience, the initiative supports the preservation and promotion of Asian cultural heritage. It also underscores the importance of cultural exchange and diversity in the film industry. For Mubi, this collaboration enhances its reputation as a curator of arthouse cinema, while Chanel's involvement reflects its commitment to supporting the arts. This initiative could inspire other cultural institutions to invest in similar projects, fostering a more inclusive and diverse cinematic landscape.
