What's Happening?
USA Surfing has been reinstated as the official national governing body for surfing in the United States by the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC). This decision comes after a period of decertification that began in December 2021 due to financial
issues identified in a USOPC audit. The reinstatement is effective from June 1, 2026, and marks the end of a contentious period during which U.S. Ski and Snowboard attempted to take over the governance of the sport. USA Surfing secured a multimillion-dollar endowment to stabilize its finances, which was a significant factor in regaining its status. The organization’s new leadership and approach were pivotal in this development, according to USOPC chair Gene Sykes.
Why It's Important?
The reinstatement of USA Surfing as the national governing body is crucial as it prepares to guide the sport into the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. This decision ensures that surfing will have a dedicated and financially stable organization to oversee its development and representation at the Olympics. The resolution of this governance issue also highlights the importance of financial transparency and stability in sports organizations. The decision may impact the sport's growth and popularity in the U.S., potentially increasing participation and interest as the Olympics approach. Additionally, the USOPC's decision to certify USA Lacrosse as the governing body for lacrosse, which will be a medal sport for the first time since 1908, underscores the expanding diversity of sports in the Olympic program.
What's Next?
With USA Surfing's reinstatement, the organization will focus on preparing athletes for the 2028 Olympics. This includes developing training programs, securing sponsorships, and promoting the sport nationally. The organization will also need to maintain financial stability and transparency to avoid future governance issues. As the LA Olympics approach, USA Surfing will likely engage in promotional activities to boost the sport's profile and attract new participants. The broader Olympic community will be watching closely to see how USA Surfing manages its responsibilities and whether it can capitalize on the opportunity to grow the sport in the U.S.
