What's Happening?
Dominique Savelkoul, the managing director of the European Fine Art Foundation (Tefaf), has left her position due to differing views on the organization's strategic direction. Savelkoul, who was the fifth person to hold this role in four years, joined Tefaf in September 2024. She previously served as the director of Mu.ZEE in Belgium and held management roles at London's National Gallery and Philharmonic Orchestra. During her tenure, she focused on enhancing sustainability and attracting younger collectors. Her departure follows that of her predecessor, Bart Drenth, who resigned in June 2023 after controversial social media posts resurfaced. Tefaf, known for its prestigious art and antiques fairs in Maastricht and New York, has not yet announced
a replacement for Savelkoul.
Why It's Important?
The frequent turnover in Tefaf's leadership highlights potential instability within the organization, which could impact its strategic initiatives and reputation in the art world. As Tefaf is a significant player in the international art market, changes in its leadership could influence its ability to attract exhibitors and collectors, particularly as it seeks to appeal to a younger demographic. The departure of Savelkoul, who was focused on sustainability and modernizing the fair's appeal, may slow these efforts. Additionally, the lack of a permanent replacement could create uncertainty among stakeholders and affect the planning and execution of upcoming fairs.
What's Next?
Tefaf is expected to announce a new managing director, either on an interim or permanent basis, to ensure continuity in its operations. The next editions of Tefaf are scheduled for March 2026 in Maastricht and May 2026 in New York. The organization will need to address any strategic disagreements internally to stabilize its leadership and maintain its position in the competitive art fair market. Stakeholders will be watching closely to see how Tefaf navigates this transition and whether it can continue to innovate and attract a diverse range of exhibitors and collectors.
