What's Happening?
This summer, a landmark auction will take place in Paris, featuring the personal archives of Martin Margiela, the founder of Maison Margiela. Scheduled for July 9, the auction is organized by Maurice Auction
in collaboration with Kerry Taylor Auctions. It will showcase over 200 lots from Margiela's archives, spanning from 1984 to 2008. This event marks the first time a designer of Margiela's stature has directly partnered with an auction house to offer, sort, and authenticate his personal archives. The collection includes intimate work relics and objects that highlight the history and influence of Maison Margiela in the fashion industry. Notable items include a 1987 work file, a white coat worn by Margiela, and the Tabi Graffiti from 1991. Additionally, the auction will feature approximately 60 outfits and accessories from the wardrobe of Margiela's mother, reflecting his work at Hermès.
Why It's Important?
The auction is significant as it provides unprecedented access to the personal archives of Martin Margiela, a designer known for his enigmatic and profound influence on fashion. By partnering directly with auctioneers, Margiela offers collectors and institutions a rare opportunity to acquire pieces that document the creative process and history of Maison Margiela. This event not only highlights the designer's legacy but also restores the concept of 'archive' to its original depth, moving away from celebrity-driven trends. The auction is expected to attract significant interest from collectors and fashion enthusiasts, further cementing Margiela's impact on the fashion world.
What's Next?
Prior to the auction, an exhibition designed by Bob Verhelst will be held, allowing professionals and visitors to experience the materiality and fragility of the objects. This exhibition will provide a unique opportunity to engage with the pieces in a setting reminiscent of an early 20th-century workshop. The auction itself is anticipated to draw considerable attention from the fashion community, potentially influencing future trends in how personal archives are curated and sold. The outcome of the auction could set a precedent for other designers considering similar partnerships.
