What's Happening?
Andrew Wantz has signed a minor-league contract with the Chicago Cubs and will report to Triple-A Iowa. Previously, Wantz was with the Tampa Bay Rays, where he struggled in his brief major league appearance, allowing five earned runs over 1.2 innings.
His performance at the Rays' Triple-A affiliate in Durham was also challenging, with a 7.04 ERA and a 1.78 WHIP over 23 innings. Wantz elected free agency after clearing waivers, leading to his new opportunity with the Cubs.
Why It's Important?
The signing of Andrew Wantz represents a strategic move by the Cubs to bolster their pitching depth, particularly in their minor league system. Given the Cubs' current pitching challenges, including injuries to key players, adding a pitcher like Wantz could provide valuable options for the team as they navigate the season. While Wantz's recent performance has been less than stellar, the Cubs may see potential in his ability to develop and contribute, especially if he can refine his skills and improve his consistency.
