What's Happening?
Rackla Metals Inc., a Canadian junior exploration company, has announced a significant breakthrough in its exploration efforts at the Lentung Tungsten Property in the Yukon. The company has been digitizing historical data for its 19,600-hectare property,
which includes extensive drilling and technical studies. This data will be used to create 3-D geographical models to guide future drilling programs. The property, previously owned by Union Carbide, boasts substantial infrastructure, including 26,000 meters of drilling across 178 holes, identifying 15 tungsten occurrences over a 15-kilometer strike length. The historical resource estimates suggest high-grade deposits with open-pit potential, ranking among the world's highest-grade tungsten skarn systems. Rackla plans to initiate a 10,000-meter drilling campaign in 2026 to confirm these resources and expand near-surface mineralization.
Why It's Important?
The discovery of significant tungsten potential in the Yukon is crucial given the current global supply constraints. Tungsten is a critical component in military applications due to its strength and heat tolerance. With China, the world's largest tungsten producer, halting shipments to the U.S., there is a shortage affecting America's military assets. The demand for tungsten has surged, driven by military rearmament and geopolitical tensions, leading to a 557% price increase over the past year. Rackla's exploration efforts could help alleviate some of these supply issues by providing a new source of tungsten outside of China, which currently dominates 83% of the global supply. This development is particularly significant for North America, where the only producing tungsten mine closed in 2015.
What's Next?
Rackla Metals Inc. plans to commence a 10,000-meter drilling campaign in 2026, focusing on confirming historical resources and expanding near-surface mineralization. The company will also conduct archaeological and environmental studies to supplement previous studies by Union Carbide. With tungsten prices at record highs, Rackla's efforts could attract significant investment, especially given the strategic importance of tungsten in military applications. The success of this campaign could position Rackla as a key player in the North American tungsten market, potentially influencing global supply dynamics.
