A Life-Altering Accident
Born on January 25, 1918, in Grant Parish, Louisiana, Ed Head was a promising left-handed pitcher in his youth. However, his life took a dramatic turn at the age of 15 when he was involved in a vehicle accident. The accident was tragic, resulting in the death of his girlfriend and leaving Head with a severely injured left arm. Doctors considered amputating the arm, but after hours of surgery, it was saved.
Despite the successful surgery, Head could no longer use his left arm to pitch. Faced with this daunting challenge, he made the bold decision to switch to pitching with his right arm. This transition required immense dedication and perseverance, as he had to relearn the mechanics of pitching from scratch.
Rising to the Major Leagues
Head's determination paid off when he joined the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1940. Although his initial performance was modest, with a 1-2 record, he was sent back to the minor leagues for further development. He returned to the Dodgers in 1942, where he became an integral part of the team's starting rotation, finishing the season with a 10-6 record.
His career faced another interruption when he was called to serve in the Army during World War II. This service kept him away from baseball for most of 1944 and all of 1945. Despite this setback, Head remained committed to his baseball career and returned to the Dodgers in 1946.
Achieving a No-Hitter
In 1946, Ed Head achieved one of the most significant milestones of his career by pitching a no-hitter against the Boston Braves on April 23 at Ebbets Field. This remarkable feat was a testament to his skill and determination, marking a high point in his career.
Unfortunately, a few weeks after his no-hitter, Head suffered a right arm injury that ended his season. He attempted to return to the major leagues in 1947 but was unable to make the team, marking the end of his Major League career.
