Hines attended Bowling Green Business University, which later became part of Western Kentucky University. His career began in the American West, where he worked for Wells Fargo and other companies before settling in Chicago, Illinois.
In Chicago, Hines worked as a traveling salesman for a printer. This job required him to travel extensively across the United States, a task that was challenging given the limited number of chain restaurants and the absence of an interstate highway system at the time. This experience laid the foundation for his future endeavors in the food industry.
Pioneering Food Critic
Hines' extensive travels exposed him to a wide variety of local restaurants, which he began to document. In 1935, at the age of 55, he and his wife Florence compiled a list of several hundred good restaurants across the country. This list became popular among friends and eventually led to the publication of his first book, "Adventures in Good Eating." The book highlighted restaurants and their featured dishes that Hines had personally enjoyed.
The success of "Adventures in Good Eating" prompted Hines to publish additional guides, including one that recommended lodging. His work as a food critic was groundbreaking at the time, as it provided travelers with reliable recommendations in an era when such information was scarce.

In the early 1950s, Hines expanded his influence in the food industry by lending his name to a line of food products. In 1952, he introduced Duncan Hines bread through a partnership with Durkee's Bakery Company. By 1953, he had sold the rights to his name and book title to Roy H. Park, leading to the creation of Hines-Park Foods. This company licensed the Duncan Hines name to various food-related businesses, including the development of the first Duncan Hines cake mixes.
Hines' entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to quality have left a lasting legacy. The Duncan Hines brand, now owned by Conagra Brands, continues to be a staple in American households.
