The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) has relied on robust fundraising strategies and philanthropic contributions to sustain its mission of supporting Black students and historically Black colleges and universities
(HBCUs). Over the years, the organization has received significant donations from individuals and corporations, enabling it to provide scholarships and strengthen educational institutions. This article explores the fundraising efforts and philanthropic support that form the financial backbone of the UNCF.
High-Profile Donations
The UNCF has been the recipient of numerous high-profile donations that have significantly bolstered its financial resources. One notable contribution came from then-senator and future U.S. President John F. Kennedy, who donated the money from the Pulitzer Prize for his book "Profiles in Courage" to the fund. Another major donation was made in 1990 by Walter Annenberg, who contributed $50 million to the UNCF.
These donations reflect the widespread recognition of the UNCF's mission and the importance of supporting higher education for Black students. The organization has also benefited from contributions by prominent figures in the entertainment industry, such as singer Lou Rawls, who began the "Lou Rawls Parade of Stars" telethon in 1980 to benefit the UNCF.
Fundraising Events and Campaigns
In addition to individual donations, the UNCF has organized various fundraising events and campaigns to support its mission. The "Lou Rawls Parade of Stars," now known as "An Evening of Stars," has raised over $200 million in 27 shows for the fund through 2006. The event features stories of successful African-American students who have graduated or benefited from HBCUs, along with comedy and musical performances from various artists.
Other fundraising activities include the "Walk for Education" held annually in Los Angeles, California, and an annual golf tournament hosted by the Cypresswood Golf Club in Houston, Texas. These events engage communities and raise awareness about the importance of supporting Black students and educational institutions.
Recent Philanthropic Support
In recent years, the UNCF has continued to receive substantial philanthropic support. In 2024, the Lilly Endowment awarded a $100 million unrestricted grant to support the organization's $1 billion capital campaign. This gift is the largest donation in UNCF's history and expands the pooled endowment for its 37 member HBCU institutions.
Such contributions are crucial for addressing immediate institutional needs and broader inequities in higher education funding for historically Black institutions. The UNCF's fundraising efforts and philanthropic support ensure the organization's ability to provide scholarships and strengthen HBCUs, fostering educational opportunities and social mobility for Black students.
