The Harmonic Convergence, held in August 1987, marked the world's first synchronized global peace meditation. This event was organized by José Argüelles and Lloydine Burris Argüelles through the Planet Art Network. It coincided with a unique alignment of planets in the solar system, known as a grand trine, which is considered a harmonious astrological configuration. The convergence was believed to usher in a shift from warlike to peaceful energies
on Earth, initiating a period of cleansing and transformation.
Origins and Organization
The Harmonic Convergence was not just an astrological event but also a cultural phenomenon. José Argüelles, inspired by Aztec prophecies, connected the timing of the convergence with Maya calendrics. The dates were derived from Tony Shearer's interpretation of the Aztec calendar, marking the end of twenty-two cycles of 52 years each. This period was divided into thirteen "heaven" cycles and nine "hell" cycles, the latter beginning with Hernán Cortés's landing in Mexico in 1519. The convergence was seen as the end of these cycles, symbolizing a transition to a new era.
The event was organized by the Planet Art Network, a peace movement founded by the Argüelles couple in 1983. It aimed to gather people worldwide in meditation, focusing on peace and harmony. The convergence was believed to be a turning point, where Earth's energy shifted from conflict to cooperation.
Astrological Significance
Astrologically, the Harmonic Convergence was marked by a grand trine, an alignment of the Sun, Moon, and six planets forming an equilateral triangle. This configuration is considered harmonious, suggesting ease and beneficial outcomes. The planets involved included the Sun, Moon, Mars, Venus, Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus, each contributing to the overall energy of the event.
Despite the alignment's significance, traditional astrology does not view trines as action points. However, believers of the convergence saw it as a major energy shift, a window of light allowing access to higher realms of awareness. The event was thought to begin a countdown to the end of the Mayan Long Count in 2012, heralding a new cycle of peace and cooperation.
Cultural Impact and Legacy
The Harmonic Convergence had a lasting cultural impact, inspiring gatherings at power centers like Mount Shasta and Mount Fuji. These locations were believed to hold strong spiritual energy, and the convergence aimed to facilitate the arrival of a new era through collective meditation.
Actress Shirley MacLaine described the event as a "window of light," emphasizing its potential to change global perspectives. The convergence was seen as a catalyst for universal peace, with many adherents believing it marked the beginning of a new age. Although the predicted changes were esoteric, the event remains a significant moment in the history of global peace movements.
