The Birth of Twinkies

James Dewar, working for the Continental Baking Company in Schiller Park, Illinois, noticed that the machines used for making cream-filled strawberry shortcakes were idle when strawberries were out of season. To make use of these machines year-round, Dewar conceived the idea of a snack cake filled with banana cream, which he named Twinkies. The name was inspired by a billboard for "Twinkle Toe Shoes" that Dewar saw in St. Louis.
The original Twinkies were filled with banana cream, but during World War II, bananas were rationed, forcing the company to switch to vanilla cream. This change proved popular, and the vanilla cream filling became the standard for Twinkies, with banana cream making occasional limited-time returns.
Twinkies Through the Decades
Over the years, Twinkies have seen various changes and challenges. In 1988, Hostess introduced Fruit and Cream Twinkies with a strawberry filling, but the product was soon discontinued. The dominance of vanilla cream was briefly challenged in 2005 during a promotion for the movie King Kong, which saw a temporary return of the banana-cream Twinkie. This promotion was successful, leading to the reintroduction of banana-cream Twinkies in 2007, albeit with a slight modification to the recipe.
Twinkies faced a significant challenge in 2012 when Hostess Brands filed for bankruptcy, leading to a temporary suspension of production. However, Twinkies made a triumphant return to store shelves in 2013 after being purchased by Apollo Global Management and Metropoulos & Co.
Twinkies Today
Today, Twinkies are produced in various locations, including the United States, Canada, and Mexico. They are available in different flavors and forms, such as Chocolate Cake Twinkies introduced in 2017 and Twinkies Cereal launched in 2020. Despite changes in ownership and production, Twinkies remain a beloved snack, celebrated for their unique taste and cultural significance.
