Always Dreaming's victory in the 2017 Kentucky Derby was the culmination of a carefully planned journey. This dark bay colt, bred in Kentucky, was from the first crop of foals sired by Bodemeister, a notable runner-up in both the 2012 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. His dam, Above Perfection, was an exceptional sprinter, adding to the colt's impressive pedigree. Owned by a partnership that included MeB Racing, Brooklyn Boyz, and others, Always Dreaming was trained
by the renowned Todd Pletcher.
Early Career and Training
Always Dreaming began his racing career as a two-year-old, finishing third in his debut at Belmont Park and second at Saratoga. In September 2016, he was transferred to Todd Pletcher's barn, where he was given time off to mature. Pletcher noticed a significant improvement in the colt's performance upon his return to training, recognizing his "extra special talent."
In early 2017, Always Dreaming made his three-year-old debut at Tampa Bay Downs, winning a maiden special weight race by an impressive 11 1/2 lengths. This victory was followed by another win in an Allowance Optional Claiming race at Gulfstream Park, where he set a slow pace before pulling away to win by four lengths. These performances set the stage for his entry into the Florida Derby.
The Florida Derby and Derby Preparations
The Florida Derby was a pivotal moment for Always Dreaming, as he faced Grade I competition for the first time. He was the second betting choice behind Gunnevera, another Kentucky Derby hopeful. Always Dreaming vied for the early lead and then pulled away to win by five lengths, solidifying his status as a top contender for the Kentucky Derby.
In preparation for the Derby, Always Dreaming was shipped to Churchill Downs. However, his headstrong behavior during morning workouts raised concerns. Pletcher addressed this by changing the exercise rider and adding draw reins, which helped the colt settle and focus his energy. This adjustment proved crucial in the lead-up to the big race.
The Kentucky Derby Triumph
On May 6, 2017, Always Dreaming entered the Kentucky Derby as the post-time favorite. Despite the "Wet Fast" track conditions, he broke well from post position five and quickly settled behind the early leader, State of Honor. As the race progressed, Always Dreaming moved to the outside and took the lead, ultimately winning by 2 3/4 lengths.
This victory was a testament to the careful planning and training that went into Always Dreaming's journey. It marked the second Derby win for both Pletcher and jockey John Velazquez, and it was a first for the ownership group. Always Dreaming's triumph was a dream come true for all involved, showcasing the potential of a well-bred and well-prepared racehorse.
