Janet Gardner is not only known for her powerful vocals and guitar skills as part of the band Vixen but also for her unique ability to balance a career in music with her personal life. Gardner's journey is a testament to her versatility and dedication, as she navigated the demands of rock stardom while pursuing a career in dental hygiene.
Rock Star Beginnings
Gardner's musical career began in earnest when she joined Vixen in 1983. As the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist,
she was instrumental in the band's success during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Vixen's debut album, released in 1988, featured the hit single "Edge of a Broken Heart," which propelled the band to international fame. Gardner's dynamic stage presence and vocal prowess were key to Vixen's appeal, leading to tours with major acts like Ozzy Osbourne and Bon Jovi.
Transition to Personal Endeavors
After Vixen disbanded in 1992, Gardner took a hiatus from music to focus on personal endeavors. She briefly reformed Vixen in 1997 and again in 2001, but her interests had expanded beyond music. Gardner pursued a degree in dental hygiene, graduating from the University of Bridgeport in 2005. For nearly 15 years, she maintained a license as a dental hygienist, balancing her work in healthcare with occasional musical projects.
A New Chapter
Gardner's ability to balance her dual careers is evident in her decision to leave Vixen in 2019 to focus on her solo music career and family. Her solo album, released in 2017, showcased her musical talents beyond Vixen, with Gardner playing multiple instruments. Her personal life includes her marriage to guitarist Justin James and her role as a stepmother. Gardner's journey reflects her commitment to both her passions, demonstrating that it's possible to excel in multiple fields with dedication and hard work.
