KREX-TV has been a significant presence in the Grand Junction, Colorado, media landscape since its inception. This article explores the station's journey from its early days to its current status, highlighting key developments and changes over the decades. As the first television station on the Western Slope, KREX-TV has played a pivotal role in shaping local broadcasting.
Early Beginnings and Expansion
KREX-TV began its journey on May 30, 1954, originally broadcasting as KFXJ-TV.
The station was founded by Rex Howell, who had previously brought radio to the area by relocating KFXJ radio to Grand Junction in 1930. Initially, KREX-TV was the only television station on the Western Slope for 25 years, airing programming from all major networks, with a primary affiliation with CBS. This monopoly allowed the station to become a central source of entertainment and information for the region.
In 1956, KREX-TV expanded its reach by establishing a satellite station, KREY-TV, in Montrose. This was followed by another satellite, KREZ-TV, in Durango in 1965. These expansions helped KREX-TV to cover a larger geographic area, bringing its programming to more viewers across Colorado.
Changes in Ownership and Network Affiliations
The ownership and network affiliations of KREX-TV have seen several changes over the years. After Rex Howell's death in 1978, the station was acquired by Withers Broadcasting in 1985. Under Withers, KREX-TV added a third satellite, KREG-TV in Glenwood Springs, in 1987. However, KREZ-TV was sold off in 1995.
During this period, KREX-TV also acquired the franchise to broadcast Fox programming, which led to the creation of KFQX. The station's network affiliations evolved over time, with ABC programs moving to KJCT in 1979, and KREX-TV continuing as a CBS and NBC affiliate until KKCO began broadcasting in 1996.
Modern Developments and Challenges
In 2003, Hoak Media purchased KREX-TV, marking another shift in ownership. A significant challenge arose in 2008 when the station's studios were destroyed in a fire, causing damages estimated at $6 million. Despite this setback, KREX-TV continued to operate by using facilities at Western Colorado Community College and later rebuilt its studios in 2009.
In 2014, Nexstar Media Group acquired KREX-TV, further solidifying its presence in the media landscape. Today, KREX-TV continues to serve as a vital source of news and entertainment for the Western Slope, maintaining its affiliation with CBS and operating alongside other stations like KFQX and KGJT-CD.
KREX-TV's history is a testament to its resilience and adaptability in the face of challenges and changes in the broadcasting industry. From its early days as the sole television station in the region to its current status as part of a larger media group, KREX-TV has remained a cornerstone of local media.
