Joseph Barbera grew up in the Little Italy section of Manhattan, New York, where he displayed a talent for drawing from a young age. His early career included working as a tailor's delivery boy and attempting to become a cartoonist for The NY Hits Magazine.
In 1932, Barbera joined Van Beuren Studios as an animator and storyboard artist, marking the beginning of his professional journey in animation. He later moved to Terrytoons in 1936, where he continued to hone his skills. His first solo storyboard effort, featuring Kiko the Kangaroo, demonstrated his potential, even though it was not produced.
Partnership with William Hanna
Barbera's career took a significant turn when he moved to California in 1937 to work at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM). It was here that he met William Hanna, and the two quickly realized their potential as a team.
