Prelude to Violence
The Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 had opened Kansas Territory to settlement, allowing its residents
to decide whether to permit slavery. This led to a rush of settlers from both pro-slavery and anti-slavery states, each hoping to influence the decision. Lawrence, founded by anti-slavery settlers, quickly became a focal point of Free-State activity, drawing the ire of pro-slavery advocates.
Tensions escalated when Sheriff Samuel J. Jones, a pro-slavery Missourian, was shot while attempting to arrest anti-slavery residents. Although he survived, the incident fueled animosity and provided a pretext for further aggression. Federal Marshal Israel B. Donaldson, citing interference with legal warrants, called upon pro-slavery forces to suppress the anti-slavery movement in Lawrence.
The Attack on Lawrence
On the morning of May 21, 1856, Jones and Donaldson arrived in Lawrence with a force of approximately 800 pro-slavery men. The attackers quickly took control of the town, targeting key symbols of Free-State resistance. They destroyed the printing offices of the Kansas Free State and the Herald of Freedom, throwing their presses into the river and scattering their type. The Free State Hotel, a prominent anti-slavery establishment, was set ablaze using the newspapers as kindling.
The sacking resulted in widespread looting, with Jones's men pillaging the town and burning the home of Charles L. Robinson, a Free-State leader. Despite the destruction, the human toll was relatively low, with only one fatality—a member of Jones's gang who was struck by falling debris.
