Proven Effectiveness
Numerous studies have confirmed the effectiveness of ESC in enhancing vehicle safety. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) conducted a field study in 2004, concluding that ESC reduces crashes by 35 percent. SUVs equipped with ESC were involved in 67 percent fewer accidents compared to those without the system.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) issued a study in 2006, estimating that up to 10,000 fatal crashes in the U.S. could be avoided annually if all vehicles were equipped with ESC. The study found that ESC reduces the likelihood of all fatal crashes by 43 percent, fatal single-vehicle crashes by 56 percent, and fatal single-vehicle rollovers by 77 to 80 percent.
Global Adoption
The effectiveness of ESC has led to its widespread adoption and regulatory mandates across the globe. In 2009, the European Union decided to make ESC mandatory, with type approval granted only to models equipped with ESC from November 2011. By November 2014, ESC was required on all newly registered cars in the EU.
In the U.S., the NHTSA mandated ESC for all new passenger vehicles sold from the 2012 model year, estimating it would prevent 5,300 to 9,600 annual fatalities. Canada followed suit, requiring ESC on all new passenger vehicles from September 2011. These regulations reflect the global recognition of ESC's role in enhancing road safety.
A Safety Revolution
ESC is described by many experts as the most important advance in auto safety. It is credited with saving lives and reducing the severity of crashes by helping drivers maintain control of their vehicles. The European New Car Assessment Program (Euro NCAP) strongly recommends purchasing cars fitted with stability control, and the IIHS requires ESC as an available option for its Top Safety Pick award.
