WOC (AM) is a radio station with a rich history that dates back to the early 20th century. Originally associated with the Palmer School of Chiropractic, the station has evolved significantly over the years. Today, it is owned by iHeartMedia and broadcasts news and talk programs at 1420 kHz. This article explores the station's journey from its inception to its current role in the broadcasting landscape.
Early Beginnings and Chiropractic Connection
WOC (AM) began its journey in 1922 when the Karlowa
Radio Corporation was issued a license for a broadcasting station with the call letters WOC. The station was initially located in the Rock Island Best Building. However, the costs of operation soon became too great for Karlowa, leading to the sale of WOC to Col. B. J. Palmer in March 1922. Palmer was the president of the Palmer School of Chiropractic, and he moved the station's equipment to a small studio on the school's campus in Davenport, Iowa.
The connection to chiropractic was significant, as the station adopted the slogan "World Of Chiropractic." This association lasted for nearly 75 years, highlighting the station's roots in the chiropractic community. WOC initially broadcast on the common Entertainment wavelength of 360 meters (833 kilohertz) and later expanded to include weather reports.
Technological Advancements and Network Affiliations
In October 1922, WOC upgraded to a state-of-the-art 500-watt Western Electric transmitter, allowing it to move to the more exclusive "Class B" wavelength of 400 meters (750 kilohertz). This upgrade marked a significant technological advancement for the station, enhancing its broadcasting capabilities.
By 1924, WOC was identified as one of 21 stations desirable for a radio network due to its coverage and reliable technical performance. In September 1927, WOC became a charter member of the new NBC radio network, further solidifying its place in the broadcasting industry.
Modern Era and Ownership Changes
The station underwent several changes in ownership and format over the years. In 1986, WOC and its FM sister station were purchased by Vickie Anne Palmer and her then-husband, J. Douglas Miller. The station was later sold to Clear Channel Communications, now known as iHeartMedia, in 2000.
Today, WOC (AM) broadcasts a news/talk radio format and is affiliated with Compass Media Networks, Fox News Radio, and Premiere Networks. It serves the Quad Cities area and continues to be a significant player in the broadcasting industry, reflecting its evolution from a chiropractic-associated station to a modern media outlet.
