Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, originally a 1991 film directed by Kevin Reynolds, made a significant leap from the silver screen to the gaming world. This transition was marked by the release of a video game adaptation for the Nintendo Entertainment System and Game Boy, developed by Sculptured Software, Inc. and Bits Studios, respectively. The game, published by Virgin Games, sought to capture the adventurous spirit of the film while offering players
an interactive experience.
Development and Release
The video game adaptation of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves was released in 1991, the same year as the film. Sculptured Software, Inc. took charge of developing the NES version, while Bits Studios handled the Game Boy version. Despite the anticipation generated by its feature as the cover game for the July 1991 issue of Nintendo Power magazine, the game was not released until four months later. This delay did not deter fans, who eagerly awaited the chance to step into Robin Hood's shoes.
The game was initially planned for additional platforms, including the Master System and Game Gear, but these versions were ultimately canceled. The decision to focus on NES and Game Boy allowed developers to hone the gameplay mechanics and ensure a quality experience for players.
Gameplay Mechanics
Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves offered players a variety of gameplay modes, each designed to immerse them in the world of Sherwood Forest. The standard adventuring mode provided an overhead perspective, allowing players to guide Robin through various environments while battling enemies. This mode emphasized exploration and strategy, as players navigated through the game's challenges.
In addition to the adventuring mode, the game featured one-on-one duels and large-scale melee battles. The duels were depicted from a side perspective, offering a different set of controls for jumping, attacking, and guarding. The melee mode, on the other hand, presented action from an extreme overhead perspective, showcasing large-scale battles between Robin's merry men and enemy forces.
Storyline and Reception
The game's storyline closely followed the film's plot, beginning with Robin Hood's imprisonment in an Arab prison in Jerusalem. Players were tasked with freeing Robin and his companions, Peter Dubois and Azeem, and escaping to England. Upon returning, Robin discovered his father's murder and the oppressive rule of the Sheriff of Nottingham. The game culminated in Robin's mission to defeat the Sheriff and marry Maid Marian.
The Game Boy version received positive reviews, with Power Unlimited awarding it a score of 83%. Critics praised the game's excitement and adventurous spirit, although they noted that the character designs could have been more visually appealing. Despite these minor criticisms, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves succeeded in bringing the film's narrative to life in a new and engaging format.
