The Crossfire Hurricane investigation, initiated by the FBI to explore potential links between Donald Trump's presidential campaign and Russian interference in the 2016 election, was not without its share of controversies and criticisms. This article examines the various challenges and disputes that arose during and after the investigation, highlighting the complexities of such a high-profile inquiry.
Allegations of Political Bias
One of the most significant controversies surrounding
the Crossfire Hurricane investigation was the allegation of political bias. President Trump and his allies frequently claimed that the investigation was initiated on false pretenses and for political purposes. They argued that the investigation was a politically motivated attempt to undermine Trump's presidency.
In response to these allegations, the Justice Department's Inspector General, Michael E. Horowitz, conducted a review of the investigation. Released in December 2019, the report found no evidence that political bias influenced the initiation of the investigation. However, it did identify 17 errors or omissions in the FBI's FISA warrant applications, which were used to surveil former Trump aide Carter Page.
Errors in FISA Warrant Applications
The errors in the FISA warrant applications became a focal point of criticism. The Inspector General's report highlighted that the FBI made significant mistakes in its applications to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court. These errors included inaccuracies and omissions that raised questions about the validity of the surveillance conducted on Carter Page.
As a result of these findings, two of the four FISA warrants were declared invalid by the Department of Justice in January 2020. This decision further fueled the controversy, leading to increased scrutiny of the FBI's actions during the investigation.
The Durham Investigation
In response to the controversies surrounding the Crossfire Hurricane investigation, Attorney General William Barr appointed John Durham to lead an investigation into its origins. This probe aimed to determine whether the investigation was adequately predicated and whether there was any overreach by the FBI or Department of Justice leadership.
Durham's investigation concluded in May 2023, criticizing the FBI and Justice Department for failing to uphold their mission of strict fidelity to the law. However, it did not recommend additional indictments or significant changes to FBI practices.
The Crossfire Hurricane investigation remains a contentious topic, with debates over its legitimacy and execution continuing to shape discussions about political investigations and foreign interference in U.S. elections.
